Living Systems: A net positive campus redefining the relationship between nature, research and design

Conceived as a new model for botanical institutions, the re-envisioned Marie Selby Botanical Gardens merges architecture, landscape, and ecology into a cohesive expression of environmental stewardship. Drawing inspiration from the site’s unique epiphytic plant collections, the design channels the principles of biomimicry to create a regenerative campus that not only conserves energy but actively produces it.

The world’s first Certified Net Positive Energy botanical complex, the campus integrates advanced sustainable systems—from solar arrays and rooftop gardens to water capture and reuse strategies—while fostering meaningful connection between people and plant life. Educational, research, and culinary spaces are interwoven throughout the gardens, forming a living laboratory where science, culture, and community converge.

Through its innovative design and operational ethos, Selby Gardens becomes more than a botanical destination—it stands as an active participant in the restoration of the planet’s ecological balance.
